Yes, A36 or 1008 mild steel should be perfectly fine for the plates, especially if they are powder coated or otherwise protected against rust.

Is A36/1008 Mild Steel ok for the plates as long as it's powder coated? Or is there a more specific type of steel I can ask a supplier for rather than just carbon steel? I don't know what I don't know in this area...I just know I don't know much.

You can use V-slot profiles in the 2020 range, but if you are in Europe, g0 to Motedis.com and look for 2020 i type profiles

I’m planning to built the belt version using parts I already have and later maybe change to rack&pinion. Can a 2.4 meters long belt machine work ok, knowing that maybe change to r&P in the future?

If you think the belt version looks manageable, than the rack version is as easy, i can take the belt version as it is now and convert it to racks in an hour, it is that easy.

Same boat as Davin Tormanen. Unless it complicates the design or come with other drawbacks I'll be aiming for a rack version in "full sheet size".

I'm looking forward to this build as well. I'm looking to be able to process 1220 x 2480 sheet materials. Here in the US, 4 ft by 8 ft sheet panels are the common size.
